Bellin receives ‘Stop the Bleed’ training grant

GREEN BAY — Bellin Hospital is providing specialized Stop The Bleed (STB) training to its security team, thanks to a $1,200 grant from the Northeast Wisconsin Regional Trauma Advisory Council (NEWRTAC) and a matching contribution for equipment purchase from the Bellin Health Emergency Department.

Awarded earlier this year, the grant provides specialized Stop The Bleed training equipment to help train all members of Bellin’s security team. In addition, the security team is training its members to become STB instructors so they can train new staff and conduct refresher courses within their teams. Stop The Bleed teaches bleeding control techniques that can be used in an emergency.

“Stop The Bleed training is giving our security team an important emergency response tool that can mitigate injury and help save lives,” said Bellin Health Athletic Trainer Roland Schmidt, who was instrumental in securing the grant and providing guidance for the training. “By training them to train others, we can spread this valuable, potentially life-saving response skill even further.”

Bellin Health’s 35-plus licensed athletic trainers all have been trained in Stop The Bleed and continue to conduct yearly training refreshers. Each athletic trainer carries a Stop The Bleed kit in their medical kit, and this grant will allow even more athletic trainers to train others. In addition to formal STB trainings, Bellin athletic trainers assist in the Hands on Healthcare program that exposes middle and high school students to healthcare careers, using STB manikins to demonstrate and teach some of these life-saving techniques.
