Analyst Has Bleak Outlook for Packers Michael Pratt

With one of their seventh-round picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers selected Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt. It was a selection that many people lauded, as they were surprised he was on the board that late into the draft.

The 2023 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Michael Pratt is someone that scouts were high on. He set a career-high completing 65.4 percent of his passes during his senior season, throwing for 2,406 yards and 22 touchdowns with five interceptions.

Draft evaluators and analysts like what he brings to the table. Some scouts even believed he was more talented than a few of the quarterbacks who were selected in the first round. There is work to do when it comes to his development, but the potential to become a good NFL player is there.

Alas, it may not come with the Packers. Green Bay’s general manager Brian Gutekunst wants to get back in the habit of selecting a quarterback every year in the draft. That could create some value for the team, but in Michael Pratt’s position, his outlook is pretty bleak in the opinion of Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report.

“Jordan Love would really have to bomb after a marvelous run to conclude his first season as a starter in Green Bay. And even then (or in the case of injury), Sean Clifford or someone else who isn’t currently on the roster might take priority over a seventh-round rookie,” Gagnon wrote.

Given the expectations surrounding the franchise, it would be shocking if the Packers put themselves in a position where Michael Pratt would have to play extended snaps in the regular season. This is a team with playoff aspirations, at the very least, and relying on a rookie seventh-round pick could be a recipe for disaster.

It would not be a surprise to see the Packers bring in a veteran to fill out the depth chart behind Love. Someone like Ryan Tannehill or Teddy Bridgewater would provide the team with reliable insurance in case something were to take Love out of the lineup.
