As the Green Bay Packers get ready for the 2024 season, there are some questions about who will be the backup quarterback.

The Green Bay Packers were able to accomplish some impressive feats in the 2023 season. A win over the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the NFL Playoffs helped prove that this Packers team is going to be a threat in the NFC for years to come.

Perhaps most important, however, was the play of Jordan Love. He established himself as not only the starting quarterback for the Packers but perhaps the franchise quarterback for years to come.

Now that Love is firmly established as the starter, the Packers do have some questions regarding who will be his backup. Logically, Sean Clifford who was on the team last season will be the backup, but he is getting some offseason pressure from Michael Pratt.

Recently, Matt LaFleur spoke about Clifford. Here’s what he had to say via zonecoverage.com.

LaFleur praised Clifford’s process after the draft, saying, “I think he’s a self-starter. He’s got that intrinsic motivation. I don’t think whether we drafted Pratt or not, it’s going to change his mindset.”

Despite being drafted in the seventh round, Pratt seems to be capable of coming in and competing with Clifford for the backup job right away. Clifford does have the big advantage of being on the team for a year, learning and knowing the playbook better. But, an argument could be made that Pratt has natural talent than Clifford.

In the NFL, the backup quarterback position has become very important, as shown last season. With the season getting longer and longer, it is hard for players to play in all the games, and that includes the quarterback. While Love is still very young and healthy, one play can change all of that in the NFL.

As the summer progresses, it will be very important to see who wins the backup job and proves they can step in if needed this season. If neither can, the Packers will have to look outside the organization.
