Green Bay Packers Could Trade Some Offensive Line Depth

As the Green Bay Packers get ready for training camp, trade rumors could start picking up around the league. Every year some players emerge, making someone else on the roster expendable.

For the Green Bay Packers, that expendable piece could come from the offensive line. The team had a few departures this offseason, leaving holes that need to be filled.

Long-time left tackle David Bakhtiari was a cap casualty, released to save a ton of money. Right guard Jon Runyan Jr. departed in free agency, signing a multi-year deal with the New York Giants.

Looking to replenish depth, general manager Brian Gutekunst was busy in the offseason. A first-round pick was used on Jordan Morgan out of Arizona, the first of three offensive linemen selected.

In the fifth round, Jacob Monk was selected out of Duke. In Round 6, Travis Glover out of Georgia State was picked. In the undrafted free agent market, tackle Donovan Jennings of South Florida and Kadeem Telfort out of UAB were signed.

Five rookies at one positional group is a lot, which means the depth chart could be shuffled during training camp. One player to keep an eye on is Royce Newman.

In the opinion of Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report, Newman is one of the team’s top trade candidates this offseason.

“The 26-year-old started 16 games as a rookie in 2021. He’s had a diminished role in each season since. Last year, he made just two starts, played 183 total offensive snaps and earned a PFF grade of just 44.3…

There could be teams out there who believe they can get something more out of Newman. Starting experience is valuable in the league and there aren’t a lot of teams with a surplus of offensive line talent.

The Packers could be an exception and their willingness to deal Newman could score them an additional draft pick as Newman reaches the final year of his contract,” Ballentine wrote.

Given how the Green Bay Packers handle things along the offensive line, you need to perform to hold onto a roster spot. They are also reinforcing their depth and have a successful track record of developing young talent.

If any of the youngsters show signs of improvement during training camp, Newman will squarely be on the chopping block. As Ballentine noted, his performance has dropped off in recent seasons and the team has plenty of options to turn to for depth on the interior.
