Ex-Bears Pro Bowler linked to bitter rival with training camp approaching

One former member of the Chicago Bears likely will find his next opportunity soon with training camp quickly approaching.

Former Bears Pro Bowler and longtime tackle Charles Leno spent the last three seasons with the Washington Commanders but is a free agent now and likely will find a new deal soon.

Leno began his career with the Bears in 2014 and spent the first seven years of his career with Chicago. He earned his lone Pro Bowl nod with the Bears in 2018 and certainly can still help a team on the offensive line.

One team that was loosely linked to him as an option is the rival Green Bay Packers by Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine.

"Signing a veteran at either tackle or guard would give the Packers some added insurance that they can have a good offensive line in the first weeks of the season," Ballentine said. "Greg Van Roten is an ideal target at guard. The 34-year-old played well with the (Las Vegas Raiders) last season and should be interested in an offensive system as lineman-friendly as Green Bay's. Charles Leno might be the best available tackle option."

Leno appeared in 13 games last season with the Commanders and still has plenty left in the tank. Green Bay is a team that could use a boost on the offensive line and Leno is one of the better tackles available on the open market at this time.

Free agency has slowed to a crawl but there are plenty of players still looking for jobs. With training camp coming up quickly, it wouldn't be surprising to see players start settling for lower-than-expected contracts soon. Leno should find a new home in the not-so-distant future.
