Green Bay Packers: Breaking Down the Kenny Clark Contract Extension

    By Nick Ziegler,

One of the big offseason tasks for the Green Bay Packers was deciding on what to do with the contract situation for defensive tackle Kenny Clark. Clark is one of the best defenders on the Packers, and with the team hoping to contend for a title in the next few years, they likely want to keep as much of this current team under contract as possible.

Coming into the offseason, Clark was scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the campaign. However, with the Packers and Clark agreeing to a three-year, $64 million deal, he will be in Green Bay for the next few seasons.

With the deal becoming official, overthecap.com got the details of the deal. Recently, AcmePackingCompany.com broke down the details of the contract and what it means for the Packers now, and in the future.

Here’s what they had to say.

“If you want to think of it this way, Clark is essentially on a two-year, $38.1 million contract with the Packers from a cash flow perspective. From there, Clark has what functions as team options of $20.8 million in 2026 and $19.3 million in 2027. You can see, quickly, how fast the jump in year-to-year dollars rise between the 2024-2025 split of his deal to the 2026-2027 half.”

“Think of this contract as a cheap one-year extension with two expensive team options tagged onto the end. The Packers, however, can always renegotiate his salary and bonus down, as they have recently with aging veterans like Preston Smith, before the 2026 and/or 2027 seasons.”

On paper, this looks like a nice deal for the Green Bay Packers who will have Clark for the next couple of seasons for sure as they pursue a title. With him getting older, the Packers also keep the ability to move on in case of a drop in production that wouldn’t match his salary.

Overall, as the Green Bay Packers try to improve in 2024, this appears to be a good deal for them in both the short and the long term.
