Green Bay Packers Receiver Named Top Breakout Candidate

The Green Bay Packers may not have a prototypical No. 1 wide receiver, but quarterback Jordan Love is surrounded by a ton of talent. On any given week a different player could step up at the position for the team.

Green Bay may not have household names at wide receiver, but you will get to know these rising stars in 2024. One of the players worth keeping an eye on is Dontayvion Wicks.

A fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Wicks quickly emerged as someone that head coach Matt LaFleur could trust. When Christian Watson was sidelined by his hamstring woes, it was Wicks who the coaching staff called on to start.

He responded very well. In 15 games as a rookie, Wicks caught 39 passes for 581 yards and four touchdowns. His efficiency was off the charts, ranking as one of the better producers in the league.

Heading into 2024, big things are on the horizon for the Virginia product. Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report believes that the Green Bay Packers wideout is one of seven wide receivers ready to break out this upcoming season.

“Wicks was even more impressive when you look at more granular measures like his success rate running different routes. According to Reception Perception, Wicks had a success rate of at least 73.3 percent on seven of the 10 routes they chart.

There are a lot of young receivers on the Green Bay offense, so that stands as a challenge for Wicks to hit his ceiling. However, Wicks’ versatility and success at running a full route tree should give him an advantage over some of the more one-dimensional choices Love has,” Ballentine wrote.

Competition will be fierce for targets in the Packers’ pecking order at wide receiver. An argument could be made for any of their pass catchers to be a breakout candidate in 2024.

It shouldn’t be long until Wicks is starting for the Green Bay Packers. As Ballentine noted, he has the skill to line up all over the formation and isn’t a one-trick pony. Love can rely on him to win and produce at every level of the field.
