KINGSPORT — In a battle for first place in the Appalachian League West Division standings, the Greeneville Flyboys defeated the Kingsport Axmen via the league’s tiebreaker rule on Tuesday night.

After the game was tied 5-5 after nine innings, Kingsport elected to be on offense for the extra half inning tiebreaker and had a runner placed on first base. The Flyboys got the win by recording three outs and not allowing the Axmen to score.

Greeneville improved to 10-7 and took sole possession of first place in the West, a half game ahead of Johnson City (10-8) and a game ahead of Kingsport (9-8).

Greeneville played again at Kingsport on Wednesday night, but that result was not available at press time. The Flyboys will host Bristol at 7 p.m. Thursday.

In the win over Kingsport on Tuesday, Greeneville won despite being outhit 14-7.

Greeneville designated hitter Brodie Johnston went 2-for-4 with his third double of the season, his third home run of the season and two RBI.

Nick Arias was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Tyler Inge had a hit and an RBI, and BJ Peart and Brady Francisco each had a hit for the Flyboys.

Greeneville starter Jake Kennedy pitched 4 2/3 innings, gave up seven hits, three runs, walked none and struck out three.
