    Flyboys Steamroll River Riders, Doughboys

    The Greeneville Flyboys are on a roll, having won eight of their last nine games, most recently defeating the Elizabethton River Riders 3-2 on Sunday at Pioneer Park to improve to 18-9.

    After a scoreless first inning, the River Riders were able to push one run across in each of the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.

    The Flyboys were able to tie the game in the bottom of the third. Mycah Jordan, who had singled, stole second on an error by the catcher and managed to scamper home after a second error by the outfielder on the same throw. A few batters later, Brodie Johnston hit an RBI triple to right field to make it an even 2-2 game.

    In the fifth inning, the Flyboys stole the lead after Johnston scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2.

    The Flyboys held out the final two innings in the shortened 7-inning game to increase their strangle hold over the Appalachian West, taking a 3 1/2 game lead over the second place Kingsport.

    Ethan Phillips (1-0) drew the start and pitched five innings, earning the win. He gave up five hits, two runs, walked four and struck out three.

    Jamie Robertson pitched 2/3 of an inning, giving up two hits, before Brock Toney came in for the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out three.

    Greeneville recorded five hits, with Ariel Antigua going 2-for-3 and Johnston hitting 1-for-2 with an RBI. Brady Francisco and Jordan Lewis had one hit each.

    SATURDAY’S GAME Greeneville 10 Elizabethton 1

    Hits came easy for the Greeneville Flyboys on Saturday when they cruised to a 10-1 home victory over Elizabethton at Pioneer Park. The Flyboys totaled 12 hits to the River Riders’ one.

    The Flyboys were quick to take the lead, scoring three runs in each of the first and second innings and two more in the third, while only giving up one run in the top of the third to lead 8-1.

    Nick Arias kicked things off with an RBI single, followed by a Max Knight two-run single to left field to make it 3-0.

    In the second inning, with runners on first and second, Johnston drove in a run on a deep ball single. Johnston then took second on a throwing error by the catcher, which pushed another run through, 5-0. Knight scored the Flyboys’ sixth run on a hard ground single to center field.

    An infield error from the Flyboys in the top of the third put the Riders on the board, 6-1, but the Flyboys didn’t falter. On Greeneville’s ensuing at bat, Tyler Inge hit an RBI single, then scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 8-1.

    Greeneville added one run in the seventh on an Antigua ground out and one run in the eighth on a Johnston single to reach the final score.

    Johnston finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and Arias was 3-for-4. Knight was 2-for-4 with three RBI, Inge was 2-for-3 with one RBI and Antigua was 1-for-4 with one RBI. Avery Collins had one hit.

    Cody Carson drew the start, throwing for three innings, giving up two hits, one unearned run, walking four and striking out six. Tyler Jackson (2-0) earned the win in three clean innings with one strikeout. Ryan Reynolds pitched two innings, walking one and striking out three and Frederick closed the ninth with one strikeout.

    FRIDAY’S GAME Greeneville 9 Johnson City 1

    JOHNSON CITY — It was a slow start for both team’s on Friday in Johnson City, but the Flyboys were able to find their footing in the eighth inning, scoring six straight to pull away for the win.

    After two quiet first innings, the Doughboys were the first to push a run through in the bottom of the third. Chase Bloomer hit a line drive single to left field to put his team ahead 1-0.

    The Flyboys were quick to respond, tying the game on the ensuing at bat. BJ Peart singled and made his way to third before Arias brought him home on a deep ball single to right field, 1-1.

    It wasn’t until the seventh inning that more runs scored, with Greeneville being the one to take the lead. Inge hit a sacrifice bunt to score Jordan, and Inge was able to make it to second on a throwing error. Johnston grounded out but scored Inge to make it 3-, Greeneville.

    The dam broke in the eighth as the Doughboys compounded errors and miscues to aid the Flyboys in putting the game out of reach.

    Knight worked a walk to start the inning, followed by back-to-back infield errors, which loaded the bases. Lewis grounded out, but drove in a run, and Jordan was hit by a pitch, loading the bases back up once more, with the Flyboys up 4-1.

    Inge hit a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 5-1, and with two outs, Antigua hit a hard RBI single to the first baseman, beating the tag. Jordan scored on a wild pitch and Johnston hit a line drive RBI single to right field to make it 8-1.

    Johnson City made a pitching change mid-inning, with Caleb Ellis taking the mound, but Peart wasn’t fazed, hitting an RBI triple to right field to make it 9-1.

    Greeneville totaled 10 hits on the night, with Arias, Peart and Johnson having two each. Johnston had two RBI, while Arias and Peart had one. Antigua and Lewis had one hit and one RBI each and Brady Francisco and Knight had one hit each.

    Hunter Sloop drew the start on the mound for Greeneville, pitching the first 4 1/3 innings. Sloop gave up five hits, one run, walked three and struck out five. Blake Julius (1-0) came in for 2 2/3 innings of relief, earning his first win. He gave up two hits and struck out two. Brock Toney ended the game, striking out four in two innings.
