(Greenfield) The City of Greenfield and the Adair & Guthrie County Emergency Management Agency are organizing a 12-day volunteer cleanup effort before RAGBRAI comes to town.

They need volunteers of all skill levels to help clear the debris left by the tornadoes that struck on May 21, damaging or destroying nearly 400 homes and properties.

Volunteers are needed from July 10 to July 22 and can check in at the Volunteer Check-In Center at 801 NE 6th Street, the temporary location of the Greenfield Fire Department. The center opens at 8 a.m. daily, and large volunteer groups should contact the Emergency Operations Center at 913-961-4717 before arriving.

July 21 will mark two months since the devastating storms hit Greenfield and parts of rural Adair County. Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Agency Coordinator Jeremy Cooper says, “We believe this large-scale effort will help finalize the remaining debris cleanup so those impacted by the storms can start putting their homes and lives back together as best they can.”

Much of the work will be physically demanding, and volunteers are encouraged to bring safety equipment (work gloves, eye protection, etc.) to assist with the efforts.
