Six Berry Farms in Chassell Provide the Strawberry Festival’s Full Ton of Strawberries.
The berry farms in Chassell have provided sweet treats to residents of the Upper Peninsula for many years. Before the rise of California’s agriculture, many of Chassell grown berries would find their way grocers and markets in Chicago and much of the Midwest. There are six farms still in operation today that mainly distribute to areas of the Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin.
Lakefront concert on tap
L’ANSE — The country music of Rolling Thunder comes to the Village of L’Anse/DDA free Lakefront Concerts at 7 p.m. Thursday. The concerts are held every Thursday in the lakefront park at the foot of Broad Street at the lake. There is limited seating, so bring a chair or blanket to sit back and enjoy the good sounds, good vibes and million-dollar view.
Fire hydrants topic on tap in L’Anse
L’ANSE — During the Village of L’Anse’s meeting Monday, a water department representative provided a report on the village’s fire hydrants. Lyle Olson of the L’Anse Water Department shared that the department removed three fire hydrants that were inoperable but were able to salvage a couple and return them to working condition.

L’Anse Creuse superintendent named MEA senior executive director
L’Anse Creuse Public Schools Superintendent Erik Edoff will be heading off to a new post this fall. Edorr has been named senior executive director of the Michigan Education Association effective Sept. 1. The state’s largest school employee union announced Edoff’s hiring for its top staff position on Friday.
‘A good time’ in South Range
SOUTH RANGE — The village of South Range celebrated its annual Fourth of July parade that it has had ongoing since 1906. The parade began in front of South Range Elementary before heading into the heart of the village. For this year’s parade, a handful of floats with different groups and organizations participated. The floats featured a 50-year alumni group from Jeffers High School, a few political organization vehicles, and a Fourth of July-themed cake. The participants on the floats were throwing out candy, popsicles and other treats to the parade observers.
TNC and Forest Service plant trees along Ontonagon River Watershed
According to a July 5 release from The Nature Conservancy in Michigan, the conservancy, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, with the help of contractors, planted some 51,000 native conifer tree seedlings across approximately 170 acres in the East Branch Ontonagon River Watershed and the Perch River Watershed of the Ottawa National Forest near Kenton in May.
An annual July 4th tradition: Baraga celebrates Lumberjack Days
BARAGA — As they have for more than 50 years, Baraga-area residents celebrated the Fourth of July with Lumberjack Days. The two-day festivities include a street dance, kids’ games, children’s and main parades, and a pancake breakfast, and are capped off with a fireworks display over Keweenaw Bay.

BARAGA, Mich. (WLUC) - The annual Lumberjack Celebration in Baraga County is already underway ahead of Independence Day. On Wednesday evening, community members danced the evening away on Superior Avenue until after midnight. Beforehand, the event’s Grand Marshal Mike Bianco, alongside the event’s Prince Jaxon Picard and Princess Tessa Larson, were honored.
Community Effort: Baraga State Park holds ribbon-cutting for playground equipment
BARAGA — The new playground set at the Baraga State Park saw its first users almost as soon as the ribbon touched the ground Wednesday morning. Children at the park joined representatives from the Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Army National Guard, Copper Shores and more at a ribbon-cutting to mark the park’s opening.

BARAGA, MI— The Department of Natural Resources is holding a ribbon-cutting Wednesday for the new, accessible playground at Baraga State Park. The playground boasts swings, a wavy arch for a touchy-feely experience, and a tree fort playscape complete with climbing rocks, triple and spiral slides, log steps, a balance beam, climbing nets, and connecting platforms. It all sits on a rubberized surface that makes access easier for all mobility levels.
