More schools to close early Friday because of heat

More Portland area schools have announced they will close early because of forecast triple-digit temperatures on Friday, Sept. 6.

This comes as the National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning from noon Thursday to 10 p.m. Friday.

Temperatures are expected to be near or at 100 degrees for the second day in a row. Thursday’s record-setting heat put Sept. 5 in the books for the latest 100-degree temperature ever recorded in Portland. It also broke a daily record for highest heat. Both of which happened in 1944 when the temperature was 101 degrees.

Below is the list of school districts that have announced early releases for Friday:

Portland Public Schools Three-hour early release for non-air-conditioned buildings Friday. Schools that do have air-conditioning will have a normal schedule. All afternoon activities in non-air-conditioned buildings are also canceled. More information here.Gervais School District Students will have early Friday release as they did on Thursday.Lake Oswego School District Some Lake Oswego schools will close early on Friday due to heat. All elementary schools except River Grover will be dismissed at 1:15 p.m. and Lake Oswego Middle School will dismiss at 1:25 p.m. Other school schedules will remain the same.North Clackamas School District All schools in the North Clackamas School District will be closed on Friday, Sept. 6, with no before or after school care either, according to officials.Estacada School District Two-hour early release on Friday.Oregon Trail School District Closed on Friday.Arbor School of Arts and Sciences Friday release three hours early due to heat.
