Crossings open at last after mile-and-a-half long train plowed into 18-wheeler in Gulfport

A train more than a mile long blocked several Gulfport crossings on Thursday after it collided with an 18-wheeler, police said.

Authorities said no one was injured. The crash occurred near 33rd Avenue and West Railroad street when the 18-wheeler got stuck on the tracks Thursday morning, Gulfport Police Sgt. Jason Ducre said.

The collision cleared by 3 p.m.

The crash occurred when the driver tried to cross the railroad despite a sign that warned of low ground, Ducre said. The 18-wheeler became stuck on the high grade of the tracks.

The driver left the semi-truck before the collision and was not injured, according to police. The train struck the semi-truck about 7:20 a.m.

The train blocked southbound traffic Thursday morning for a mile-and-a-half west of 30th Avenue. Police warned drivers to expect delays. Ducre said at 11:50 a.m. that 33rd Avenue remained closed from 14th Street to 12th Street.

The train was a mile-and-a-half long.

The 18-wheeler remained stalled on the tracks until CSX Transportation could investigate the crash, Ducre said.

Police warned of delays Thursday morning asked drivers to avoid the area.
