Sheriff Pete Wallin said in a press release that the scene investigation shows that a moped driven by a 15-year-old boy from Harbor Springs was traveling westbound on Quick Road and began to turn left onto Hoyt Road. The moped turned into the way of an eastbound 2020 Chevrolet pickup, driven by Zackary Schomp, 34, of Harbor Springs.

The teenager sustained serious injuries in the crash and was taken to McLaren Northern Michigan hospital in Petoskey for treatment. He was later transported to a downstate hospital in serious condition.

Schomp was not injured in the crash.

Authorities said speed or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Harbor Springs Police Department, Harbor Springs Fire Department, Emmet County EMS, Birchwood First Responders and the Emmet County Road Commission.

    The crash remains under investigation.
