    Hawks baseball beats Brill, tightens league race

    Jonah Sande pitched a two-hit shut-out as the Hayward Hawks beat the Brill Millers 2-0 Saturday July 20 at Havelka Field in Brill, snapping a four-game losing streak.

    Sande struck out 10 and walked one in the win.

    The Hawks scored a run in the fourth inning on singles by Austin Wessel, Kyle Cummings and Micah Bacon. They added a run in the eighth on a double by Terry Kilmer and a single by Bacon.

    The Hawks finished with 11 hits, no errors, and 10 left on base. Bacon, Cummings, Wessel and Kilmer had two hits apiece, while Austin Wessel, Tom Danczyk and Trent Kirkland had one hit apiece.

    Logan Hile took the loss for Brill.

    On Wednesday July 17, Brill defeated the Hawks 6-2 in a pitcher’s duel at Larry Somerville Field.

    Hawks starting pitcher Nate Harrison threw five innings, giving up five hits and one earned run, walking five and striking out 10. Phil Zeigle threw two innings, giving up four hits and two runs. Four of Brill’s runs were unearned, as the Hawks committed four errors.

    Joe Serbiak pitched the win for Brill, giving up four hits and one run, walking five and striking out nine.

    Terry Kilmer had two hits, while Phil Zeigle and Jonah Sande had one hit apiece for the Hawks.

    On Saturday July 20, Team Fadness defeated the Hawks 14-11 at Somerville Field. Matt Flesher had three hits and three RBIs for the Hawks, Zeigle had an RBI double, Trent Kirkland had two hits and a RBI, Kilmer had two hits, Alex Kaluza had a hit and three RBIs and Josh Kanters had an RBI.

    Ethan Wessel pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up 1p0 hits and six earned runs, walking two and striking out one. Austin Wessel pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and one earned run, walking two and striking out four.

    The Hawks will continue their regular season this weekend, playing the Cardinals in Spooner Friday evening, and then playing a non-league game against the Twin Ports Timbers Saturday night at Larry Somerville Field.

    9-5 overall.

    The Hawks will try to make up a suspended game against the Blue Hills Beasts sometime in the next two weeks; no date has been set yet. In the May 31 game at Ladysmith, the Hawks were leading the Beasts 4-0 when the game was suspended.
