It's been three years since beloved actress Betty Lynn passed away at 95 years old in 2021.

As Thelma Lou on TV's 1960s classic sitcom, The Andy Griffith Show (CBS, 1960-68), actress Lynn was the ideal girl next door. As girlfriend to series star Don Knotts, who played Deputy Barney Fife to Griffith's lead Sheriff Andy Taylor, Lynn made Barney's heart flutter, and maybe a few home viewers too.

    A Closer Look

Betty Lynn was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on August 29, 1926. She was the daughter of a singer and began her career as a teen performing in dinner clubs. Lynn also appeared on Broadway in musicals such as Walk with Music (1940) and Oklahoma! (the latter as a dance replacement).

Toward the end of World War II, Lynn even entertained the troops with the USO.

In the late 1940s, after being discovered on Broadway in the play, Park Avenue, Lynn signed a contract with Twentieth Century Fox and appeared in many of the studio's successful films.

Then came The Andy Griffith Show and the role her lifetime: Thelma Lou. Lynn later reprised the part with the sitcom's entire original cast (save for Frances Bavier and Aunt Bee) in the 1985 TV reunion movie, Return to Mayberry.

    Conclusion

Betty Lynn lived a long life and remained faithful to her countless dedicated fans, and vice versa.

In 2021, the Andy Griffith Museum announced Lynn's passing on their website.

"It has been my tremendous honor and joy to work with Betty and to be her friend for many years," longtime friend and colleague Tanya Jones, an executive director of Surry Arts Council, said in a statement to USA TODAY. "It was clear from our first encounter that faith, family, and friends, and — very importantly — her fans are the things that meant the most to her. Betty brought so much joy and love to so many people."
