A day before the Fourth of July, the Highland Post 439 legion baseball team got into the holiday spirit with some fireworks at the plate.

Highland exploded for seven runs in the second inning and parlayed a strong pitching effort from Nathan Terhaar into a 10-0 five-inning mercy rule win over Smithton Sr. Legion on Wednesday night at Glik Park in Highland.

“We brought the bats tonight and started running away with it in the second inning,” Highland manager Todd Kunz said. “Kids are starting to figure out things at the stick and who’s hot and who’s not and we’ve been able to figure out a lineup when you figure out who’s hot at the moment.”

Post 439 got things cooking at the plate in the bottom of the second, thanks to a seven-run explosion.

Trent Henrichs, Isaiah Gruenenfelder, Justin Terhaar keyed the big rally with RBIs.

In the bottom of the third, Highland added a run in the bottom of the third as Bryce Hoensbehn singled home a run to make it 8-0.

Highland (9-5) finished off its scoring in the home half of the fourth inning. Justin Terhaar led off with a triple and then scored on Scott Phelps single. Ben Kunz followed with a base hit and Phelps came home from third on a passed ball, pushing the lead to 10-0.

Phelps, David Carroll, Henrichs, and Hoensbehn each collected two hits to power Highland’s 12-hit attack.

The monster output by Post 439’s bats was more than enough support for Nathan Terhaar as he pitched 4 1/3 inning of shutout ball to get the win on the mound.

Ben Kunz pitched two third of an inning in relief.

“Nathan pitched 4 and a third and shut them down and Nathan Terhaar’s always good on the mound for us,” Kunz said. “I brought Ben on in relief to get a little pitching going so we can get some arms some work.”

Highland returns to action on Monday with a 6 p.m. game at Smithton Sr. Legion.
