Kewanee/Wethersfield Townships Declared Local State of Emergency
The Henry County Office of Emergency Management has declared a local state of emergency for Kewanee and Wethersfield Townships. Residents in these areas who are uninsured or underinsured and do not have the physical ability to clear downed trees from their property, may request assistance from the Henry County Office of Emergency Management. The Henry County OEM has partnered with local non-profit to provide tree cutting services for qualifying residents. “This is an offer for physical assistance, and not a financial benefit.”

Fatal 2020 Sterling apartment fire case in court this week
MORRISON, Ill. — The trial of a Rock Falls man charged with murder and arson is ongoing this week in Whiteside County. Steven Coleman is accused of setting the fatal fire on June 1, 2020, in the overnight hours at the Western Apartment Complex in Sterling. A 49-year-old woman and two girls, aged 8 and 13 died in the fire. A 35-year-old woman and 12-year-old were rescued and taken to the hospital. A Dixon firefighter and paramedic was also injured in the fire after falling through the floor.
Oneida native earns bronze medal at national SkillsUSA Championships
ATLANTA — An Oneida native is now one of the best masons in the country. Gavin Gerard, a student at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, took home the bronze medal in masonry at the SkillsUSA Championships in Atlanta at the end of June. With that win, he became the college's first medalist at a SkillsUSA national competition.
‘Rock the Raft’ in Morrison on Saturday
The Morrison Department of Fun is hosting their 2nd annual Rock the Raft on Saturday, July 20, with two departure options to float or paddle down Rock Creek. The Family Float starts at 1 p.m. and the Sip & Splash starts at 2 p.m. Participants will launch their own float, kayak, or canoe at the covered bridge on Norrish Road. A new Galesburg grocery store will be able to sell packaged liquor despite the objection of two City Council members. Galesburg Aldermen on Monday approved a Class C-1 liquor license for Save More, a new grocery expected to open within the next two week at 900 E. Main St., the former Sav A Lot. The license was approved 5-2, with Ward 3 Alderman Evan Miller and Ward 4 Alderman Dwight White casting no votes.

Lorang-Louis Holms, 29, Kewanee, was arrested for a Grundy County warrant for failure to appear for driving with a suspended license following a report to check business in the 200 block of West Third Street. She was given a notice to appear. Charles L. Holms, 30, Kewanee, was arrested for a Henry County warrant for failure to appear for aggravated domestic battery and resisting. He was transported to the Henry County Jail.
