Holbrook’s new manager starting from the ground up in planning city’s future
Holbrook’s new city manager is taking a fresh approach to city operations in order to set the city on the right path for improvements and development. Sharon Jakubowski Wolz began the job on June 24, and has had the opportunity to see some of the concerns that need to be addressed and realize some of the promise that Holbrook may hold.
Citizens voice opinions on improvements for Hunt Park
Holbrook Mayor Kathleen Smith hosted a community meeting last week to receive input from citizens regarding potential improvements to Hunt Park. Over 30 community members were in attendance, with a third of those under the age of 18. In addition, all members of the city council were in attendance. The approach suggested by Smith was to improve the assets they already have and then discuss some of the things they may not have thought about that could be added to the park. It was noted that the approach would be measured and that grants would be sought for the upgrades.
A great place to start
Last week I sat in a room with Holbrook citizens and listened as they talked about their ideas for development. The discussion was specifically about what to do to improve the city’s largest park but there was definitely more to the conversation. These citizens know that there’s a choice to be made. The choice is do something meaningful in their city and start now, or take their families and leave for a place that holds value for them. Judging by the discussion, the unanimous decision is do something meaningful. The group ranged from pre-teens to senior citizens and all had ideas to contribute, a couple of teens even brought a PowerPoint. They love their town but it’s not enough just to love a place and they know it. Action has to be taken to grow, revitalize and improve and there’s quite simply no room for those who want to wallow in the negative, undermine attempts to grow or instill seeds of doubt. Those people can stay home.
