HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — After a fire broke out at a home in Holland Friday evening, authorities say the home’s occupants are safe but will be temporarily displaced.

It happened just before 6 p.m. on the 100 block of W 9th Street, near Pine Avenue, according to a release from the Holland Department of Public Safety.

When firefighters arrived, they saw light smoke coming from the home’s attic. They entered the home immediately, made sure the occupants were out and located the fire, the release says.

According to the Holland Department of Public Safety, crews were able to extinguish the flames quickly, but they stayed on scene until nearly 8:30 p.m. to remove insulation from the attic and confirm that the fire was out.

The damage is contained to the attic and the room below where the fire started, the release says, but the people living in the home will be temporarily displaced.

Firefighters believe the fire was accidental, likely caused by an electrical fault in the attic. They warned community members of breakers and fuses that trip regularly.

“This is likely an indication of an electrical problem that could lead to a fire,” firefighters wrote in the release. “In such instances it is best to contact a licensed electrician to investigate the problem and make repairs (if) necessary.”

The department also reminded community members to check their smoke alarms often.
