Elite multisport athletes: Who made the Sentinel All-Area Team in 3 sports?

The Holland area has seen some incredible athletes come through over the years.

This school year has been one of the best with state champions, Miss Basketball and a slew of all-state athletes.

But one thing that is still rare is to find someone who is elite in three sports.

With hundreds of athletes earning Holland Sentinel All-Area First Team honors in at least one sport, there is a large group of two-sport stars, but just four athletes who made three Sentinel First Teams this school year.

Here is a look at the rare group:

    Chelsea Overbeek, West Ottawa

Overbeek has been one of the top athletes in the area for a few years and basketball was her main sport. But this year, she moved from setter to outside hitter in volleyball and transformed her game, despite standing just 5 feet, 4 inches. The West Ottawa senior dominated with her hitting and was named Holland Sentinel Volleyball Player of the Year. She was a three-sports first-teamer last year as well.

Overbeek went on to earn first team honors in basketball and soccer for the second year in a row. She was an all-state honorable mention pick in basketball and will play at Alma College next year.

    Rylee Smith, Zeeland West

Smith is one of the oddest three-sport athletes. Well, she isn't odd, but her sport choices are extremely unique. Smith has dominated in golf, earning Holland Sentinel Player of the Year all four years with the Dux. She also was the Bowler of the Year the past two years, leading Zeeland to the bowling state championship this winter.

While those possibly could go together as non-running sports based on aiming and strength, Smith has also been an elite soccer player. She earned Sentinel First Team honors for the second year in a row and remains one of the best forwards at pinpointing centering passes that the area has ever seen, no surprise with her aiming ability in her other sports, though this time, she was using her foot.

    Jordyn Klaasen, Zeeland West

Klaasen has been a four-sport athlete since she started at Zeeland West, starring in cross country, basketball, soccer and track and field.

She has been on the all-area first team in cross country, basketball and soccer the past two years. In track, her fourth sport, she was on the second team this spring.

Soccer is her best sport, but Klaasen still has another year to dominate all year long in the area.

    Parker Williams, Zeeland East

Williams is one of the strongest athletes in the area and has proved it all year long. He was an all-area selection in football as a standout pass rusher.

But wrestling was his big breakthrough this year. Last year, he was injured during wrestling season and didn't get to see what he was made of. This year, he reached the state finals at heavyweight and finished state runner-up to earn Holland Sentinel Wrestler of the Year.

He then returned to the track and earned all-state honors in the shot put for the second year in a row, capping his stellar career. He will compete in track and field at Grand Valley State next year.
