Schools Tools event provides keiki with essential supplies needed for upcoming school year

Coast Guard, good Samaritans rescue three people in distress from ocean near Honolulu airport
The Coast Guard and good Samaritans rescued three men from the water approximately 2 miles south of the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu Monday. Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command center watchstanders received notification at 5:30 p.m. over VHF-FM channel 16 of three distressed people in the water. Two passengers aboard the French-flagged Spirit of Pontapreta, a 42-foot sailing vessel, had reportedly been swept away while swimming near the vessel. The vessel’s operator jumped in to assist them but was also swept away.
Marine Protected Areas producing more ‘trophy-size’ fish
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are having a positive spillover effect, producing more “trophy-size” fish just outside of the fully protected areas, and the effect is growing stronger over time. That’s according to research led by University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa scientists at the Hawaiʻi Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) published in Science Advances. The research provides the first global assessment of the benefits of MPAs. “Trophy-size” refers to fish that are exceptionally long or heavy and are considered a rare, prized catch.

Suspected Arson, Kaua‘i Authorities Investigate Intentional Fires in Waimea, Seek Public's Help
Officials in Kaua‘i are currently investigating a fire that was extinguished in Waimea on Monday evening, which they now suspect was a case of arson. In a collated effort, the Kaua‘i Fire Department alongside the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife managed to control the blaze above Panini Place, which thankfully resulted in no injuries or structural damage. Investigators on the scene, including personnel from the Kaua‘i Fire Department Fire Prevention Bureau, DOFAW, and the Kaua‘i Police Department, later uncovered incendiary devices in the vicinity of the Poki‘i ridge fire. Investigators are treating both the Poki‘i ridge and Panini fires as intentional, as reported by County of Kaua‘i government news release.
