HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The suspect wanted in connection of a deadly shooting on West Street in Holyoke has been arrested.

Victim identified in deadly Holyoke shooting on West Street

On Wednesday, July 9th at around 11:22 p.m. Holyoke officers were called to the 50 block area of West Street for a Shotspotter activation. Upon arrival, officers found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center along with two others who were shot.

According to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, 38-year-old Dexter Ortiz of Holyoke died due to his injuries, and the two other people are expected to recover.

Nineteen-year-old Luis Rodriguez of Chicopee, was arrested the following day, July 10th for motor vehicle-related offenses. When he was arraigned in Holyoke District Court, his bail was set for $1,000. The bail was revoked due to two other narcotics cases he is awaiting trial on. He has been held at the Hampden County House of Corrections since July 10th on those charges.

On Friday, July 19th, the District Attorney’s Office said Rodriguez is being charged with the murder of Dexter Ortiz and is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday in Holyoke District Court.

“Thank you to the Holyoke Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police, the Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, and District Attorney Anthony Gulluni for bringing about this arrest. More news is forthcoming.

I also should acknowledge Holyoke’s ShotSpotter technology and our network of security cameras, which provided instant notification and significant images to the police.

Unfortunately, this good police work and technology do not erase the tragedy Holyoke has experienced. A man has been murdered. Young children have lost their father. Gun violence has shaken our citizens’ sense of security. The tragedy extends even to the perpetrators of this senseless act, who threw away their own futures with one mindless act of violence.

Everyone in our City should feel safe to drive, walk, visit, play, work, and live in every neighborhood from Ward 1 to Ward 7. Everyone in our city should feel like their government cares about their safety. I am deeply committed to ensuring our citizens know that their local government indeed cares about their safety. BUT, please know that I cannot do this alone. I need the citizens of Holyoke to demand accountability from each other. Work together as neighbors to fulfill the expectations you want for your neighborhoods.”
