HONESDALE — Even though the 2024 high school diamond season is long over, the awards and accolades just keep rolling in for Peter Modrovsky.

On Monday morning it was announced that the ace of Honesdale's pitching staff has been named to the inaugural Pennsylvania State Baseball Coaches Association All-State team.

“I'm very happy with the accomplishment and really proud that I get to represent the Honesdale baseball team one last time,” said Modrovsky.

Hornet skipper Ernie Griffis agrees and is thrilled that his star player is earning recognition outside of District 2.

“I think this honor is well-deserved,” Griffis said. “I'm glad that the Coaches Association recognized the outstanding season Peter had. He's set the standard that future generations of Hornet players will strive to emulate.”

    Statewide status

Longtime North Pocono head coach Brian Jardine is president of the PSBCA, which began as a regional organization last year and attained statewide status this spring.

“As coaches, we are thrilled that these players are receiving the kind of recognition they deserve for their efforts on and off the field,” Jardine said. “It's definitely been a long time coming.”

The PSBCA All-State honor roll is divided into six classes, A through 6A, each consisting of First and Second Team selections.

Modrovsky is one of five pitchers chosen to represent Class 4A. He is also one of just 14 Lackawanna League players overall to receive All-State kudos.

    By the numbers

Modrovsky was arguably the best pitcher in the area this spring, leading Honesdale to yet another deep run at the district tournament.

The senior southpaw powered his way to an overall record of 6-1. He worked 53 innings across 11 appearances, compiling a minuscule 0.26 ERA and 0.81 WHIP. He also piled up 97 strikeouts while issuing just 18 walks and holding opposing batsmen to a .154 batting average.

Modrovsky was a solid contributor at the plate as well, closing out his senior season with a .297 batting average. He also hit for power, blasting four doubles and a homer with 11 RBIs and 10 runs scored.

“Peter is the kind of kid we'll still be talking about years down the road,” said Griffis. “He was the total package and a pleasure to coach. Peter is not only a great player, but also a great teammate and person.”

Modrovsky will continue his academic and athletic career at Bloomsburg University in the fall. He'll be pursuing studies in history and education.

“I'm definitely excited to be starting my college career at Bloom,” he said. “I'm anxious to see what the future of Honesdale baseball holds after I leave, but really looking forward to a new journey, too.”
