Weed it G’out at the 2024 Michigan Kidney Walk

What do plants, kidneys and gout have in common? More than you think.

Many people don’t realize that chronic kidney disease (CKD) and gout have a close connection. Gout is caused when there is too much uric acid in the blood, either because the body makes more than it should or because the kidneys do not remove as much as they should. And one in four people living with moderate-to-severe CKD has gout.

Gout is a serious, systemic disease, which, like weeds in a garden, can grow beneath the surface. Just as weeds spread and cause damage to plants if they aren’t managed, gout can impact other areas of the body if not controlled.

Together, Amgen and the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) are bringing this visual to life through the Weed it G’out pop-up garden at the 2024 NKF Michigan Kidney Walk on Sunday, May 19 at the Detroit Zoo. The experience features large kidney-shaped mounds covered with fresh, local flowers that are becoming overtaken by weeds. Attendees will have the opportunity to capture and share photos, play interactive lawn games, and learn more about the link between CKD and gout.

This is one of many Kidney Walks happening across the country as the signature fundraising event for NKF, where event attendees can connect with others living or caring for someone with a chronic disease and learn more from advocacy organizations like NKF that can offer support.

Gout is a chronic and progressive disease, and when it is undertreated and undermanaged, it can become uncontrolled and lead to damage throughout the body. That’s why it’s important to work with a doctor to manage uric acid levels to prevent gout from getting out of control.

Be sure to visit Amgen’s Weed it G’out pop-up garden at the 2024 NKF Michigan Kidney Walk on Sunday, May 19 to learn more about the connection between CKD and gout.
