West Fork Advances to State Softball Tournament with Shutout of Hudson
The West Fork softball team advanced to next week’s state tournament with a 3-0 shutout of Hudson in the Class 2A Region 6 final in Sheffield Monday night. That was one of 12 strikeouts by Warhawk junior pitcher Libby Trewin who picked up the win for West Fork. Trewin pitched seven innings in the shutout of Hudson to advance to state.
One Person Killed, Suspect Arrested in Black Hawk County Shooting
(Hudson, Iowa) -- One person is dead after a shooting Sunday in Black Hawk County. Investigators say police responded to reports of the shooting around 3:40 Sunday morning in Hudson, south of Waterloo. Police say when officers arrived, they found a man with multiple gunshot wounds. The man later died of his injuries at a local hospital. A suspect has been taken into custody.

Severe storms with tornadoes whip through Midwest, cutting power to 460K
CHICAGO (AP) — Storms spawning multiple tornadoes blew through Iowa, Illinois — including Chicago — and Indiana, Monday downing trees and power poles and cutting power to more than 460,000 customers and businesses. The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado hit Des Moines, Iowa, as storms rolled through Monday afternoon and into the night. Des Moines police were responding to calls about utility poles that had apparently snapped in two. The storms then moved east into northern Illinois, including the Chicago area, which saw multiple tornado warnings, wind and drenching rain. Multiple tornadoes were reported along the line of storms that moved through the city, according to the National Weather Service. Nearly 390,000 customers were left without power in northern Illinois alone, according to poweroutage.us.

Crawford County Memorial Hospital Contributed Over $60 Million To State’s Economy
A study conducted by the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) found that Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison has contributed over $60 million to Iowa’s economy in 2023. Iowa hospitals throughout the state invested $21.3 billion, and Crawford County Memorial Hospital made up $63.7 million. Over $30 million stayed in the local community as wages and benefits from employment, $34.4 million to be more precise. The hospital supported 559.2 job opportunities, which makes up 8.5% of all individuals employed throughout Crawford County, are at the hospital. Crawford County Memorial Hospital is also a huge supporter of Denison and surrounding communities, with $2.6 million allocated for charity care to provide necessary health services to individuals who cannot afford it, serving 4.4 thousand individuals through this program.
