HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The man charged in the April accidental shooting death of a Huntsville 4-year-old is seeking youthful offender status, according to court records.

21-year-old Nickarious D Shun MCconnico, who was 20 at the time of the child’s death, filed for youthful offender status last week and a Madison County judge set the court date for that hearing on September 5.

Officers responded to an apartment complex on Jeff Rd on Sunday, April 28 around 7:30 a.m. to investigate the death of a 4-year-old child.

“MCconnico was an overnight guest at the home and left a loaded firearm on a coffee table upon going to sleep,” the Huntsville Police Department said following his arrest.

Huntsville Police said they learned through statements given during the investigation and evidence at the scene that the child picked up the firearm and fired it. He died from the self-inflicted injury produced by the gunshot, according to officials.

MCconnico was indicted for criminally negligent homicide after evidence was presented to a grand jury in early May.
