HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ( WHNT ) — July was hot here in Alabama, and the Huntsville boys basketball program was on fire with Division 1 commitments.

Three of the Panthers’ rising seniors committed to D1 programs in July: JD Gossett committed to Lipscomb, Josh Bowman to Chattanooga and Brayden Rivers committed to continuing his basketball career at UNC-Asheville.

When asked about this group of players, Huntsville head coach Christian Schweers doesn’t automatically refer to the talent on the court because he’s more impressed with the character his players show.

I just think the word unselfish sticks out. We live in a day and age and culture where everybody’s kid is most important and getting the most shots up and that stuff goes before winning and getting better and achieving goals and that hasn’t been the case for our group. Since they were real young they’ve all played together and they have a familiarity with each other. As a core they’re unselfish and they want to play well with each other. They’re excited for each other’s success and it’s genuine and you can see that it’s the strength of our team when your best players are your most unselfish players.

Another Huntsville senior is expected to commit to a D1 program. Simon Walker has narrowed his list to his top six: Auburn, Butler, Clemson, Iowa, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech.
