From the seas to the schools – the crew of the USS Boise made a voyage from Virginia to visit classrooms across the City of Trees.

The visit was organized by the USS Boise Committee, a group of volunteers who fosters ties between the USS Boise and its namesake.

Six crew members of the nuclear-powered attack submarine stopped by several elementary and junior high schools in Idaho's capital city.

"It's an awesome feeling to get out there in the community," Nuclear Electronics Technician Tah're Petit said. "I interact with people that are just so interested in what you do and what the Navy has to offer."

The submarine crew members had lunch with students and visited classrooms to answer their questions.

Petit said so far, he's been asked, "are there mermaids?" Students are also curious to know "how deep can the submarine go?"

Different members of the submarine's crew make regular visits to Boise – a tradition that helps the crew anchor their ties to the community.

"Everyone has been happy to interact with us and ask us a ton of questions," Petit said. "It's been great to feel like part of the community."
