Independence gives community an extra day of Independence Day celebrations

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — It’s a celebration of the Fourth of July on the fifth.

“I think we got really lucky picked the right day. We weren’t on the fourth but the fifth seems like the golden day,” said Independence Parks and Recreation Supervisor Jeff Umbreit.

He’s not wrong. Perfect weather for an evening of activities leading up to fireworks and the city made sure of it.

“Last year it at this time it was raining but the city council two weeks ago passed a resolution saying no rain today and 80 degrees and it came out perfect,” said Independence Mayor Rory Rowland.

New additions this year, a family games area and a grand display of kites and flags from great American kites, adding to what everyone is most excited for.

Fireworks mainly,” said Taylor Parks Quinn Jackson. “We just wanted to have some family fun and get out of the house, we have been excited for this all day.”

“I’m looking forward to the fireworks. We lit off some pretty good ones last night but this will be even more fun,” said Ricardo Fonseca.

The event was always scheduled for July 5, giving people another day to celebrate Independence Day and watch some fireworks.

The city said it plans six to seven months in advance for the celebration.
