Indiana Fever Coach Calls For Caitlin Clark To Be More Aggressive

The Indiana Fever lost their second game in a row on Thursday night, falling on the road to the Seattle Storm 89-77. The Strom did a good job of limiting the chances of Caitlin Clark, who attempted only nine shots in the game.

Caitlin Clark still led the Indiana Fever with 15 points scored despite the game plan of getting the ball out of her hands. She was 3-of-7 from 3-point range and made 4-of-5 free throws, adding six rebounds and seven assists.

After the game, Indiana Fever head coach Christie Sides made a bold comment; she wants to see Caitlin Clark be even more aggressive. Sides believes for this team to have success, the No. 1 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft needs to be shooting the ball more.

“Caitlin Clark needs to shoot a minimum of 15 shots a game for us,” Sides said . “She’s got to get shots, and we’ve got to do a better job of setting her up, setting some really good screens for her to get her open.”

Against the Storm, it was Aliyah Boston and NaLyssa Smith who led the team in shot attempts, taking 16 and 11 respectively. Kelsey Mitchell also attempted more with 10, and Erica Wheeler had eight off the bench.

Part of the reason that Caitlin Clark had only nine shots on Thursday was the game plan. What the Indiana Fever was doing on offense led to her getting double-teamed, so she was making the right play and getting the ball to her teammates.

“We played out of a lot of ball screens tonight,” Clark said . “So when you’re getting doubled on a ball screen, you’re always going to give it up. It should create an advantage for us 4-on-3 attacking the basket. But I didn’t think we played too well out of our ball screens tonight.

“I could definitely be a little more aggressive to the basket. But I think I’m just going to try to take what the defense gives me and try to set my teammates up for success, too.”

This season, Caitlin Clark is leading all rookies in points, assists, field goals made and field goals attempted. However, she is second on her own team in field goals attempted and 22nd in the league.

During her time at Iowa, she averaged 20.1 shots per game. In her record-breaking senior season, she upped that average to 22.7. If the Indiana Fever wants to find more success, she needs to get up into the mid-teens for her shot attempts as Sides suggested.
