A dark horse candidate who could steal a roster spot during the Colts 2024 Training Camp

Multiple intriguing roster battles are incoming for the Indianapolis Colts 2024 Training Camp .

This offseason, the Colts prioritized signing their own free agents, and as a result, they didn't lose a single projected starter for the upcoming season. But one of their biggest losses was seeing backup RB Zack Moss sign with the Cincinnati Bengals.

So now the backup job behind star RB Jonathan Taylor is wide open for the taking. Even if that role won't be as large as it was in 2023, taking some of the workload off Taylor's shoulders will be important.

Dark Horse to make the Colts roster

The Colts chose not to address their backup RB spot during the offseason, with them electing not to sign a veteran free agent or use a draft pick on the position. If I had to pick at the moment, I'd say veteran Trey Sermon, who re-signed with the team this offseason, is the favorite to win the job, with second-year Evan Hull close behind.

While he may not be a top option for the job, I think a second-year player has a better shot than people realize to steal a roster spot. That player is 2023 undrafted free agent RB Zavier Scott. Before an injury ended his Training Camp early in 2023, he had flashed in practice, and his versatility in college certainly showed.

He began his college career at UConn in 2018 as a WR and transferred to Maine ahead of the 2020 season. During his final season at Maine, Scott truly was a do-it-all player with him spending time at RB, slot WR, outside WR, TE, and he even logged 13 snaps at QB out of the wildcat formation.  Last year during Training Camp, head coach Shane Steichen spoke on Scott's versatility by saying, "He can play the F tight end, the receiver, the running back, and all that stuff.".

To me, picking which RBs will make the team's roster is about more than who the best between the tackles backs are. And Colts assistant director of college scouting Jamie Moore's words on the role being minimized all but prove that idea.

If we shouldn't expect Taylor's workload to be as limited as we saw it in 2023, I think the roster spots behind him will be given to the players who can produce in the passing game as well as on special teams. And that sounds a lot like Scott to me. Though he might not win the backup job, I think there is going to be a very competitive battle among the RBs during Training Camp as the team figures out how many they want to keep on their initial 53-man roster. So essentially, I'm saying don't count Scott out just yet.
