On October 24th, 2023, Anthony Richardson underwent shoulder surgery to repair an injury to his AC joint in his throwing shoulder.

Anytime there is a surgery involving a shoulder, the minimum recovery time is six to eight months to return to a contact. That means Richardson should have been ready for NFL contact between April and June. Of course, the healing process is different for everyone.

On June 6th, he missed the final mandatory minicamp practice. This would fall within that six to eight month recovery window of a player nearing full recovery.

At the time, there were mixed emotions on how to feel. Some fans, media, and doctors dismissed the soreness and credited to typical soreness with an athlete trying to return to form. Others were nervous because of the scar tissue that is there with injuries to the franchise quarterback.

With Indianapolis set to start training camp on Thursday, it is expected that Richardson will be out there for every practice leading up to week one.

“Every indication is he’s fine, he’ll be fine.” CBS4 and FOX59’s Mike Chappell on Query & Company Monday afternoon.

During his conversation with Jake Query & Jimmy Cook , he highlighted the Colts training camp practice schedule.

    • Thursday, July 25th – 10:00 am – 11:00 am
    • Saturday, July 27th – 10:00 am – 11:15 am
    • Sunday, July 28th – 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm
    • Tuesday, July 30th – 10:00 am – 11:15 am
    • Wednesday, July 31st – 10:00 am – 11:30 am
    • Friday, August 2nd – 9:00 am – 10:45 am
    • Sunday, August 4th – 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm
    • Monday, August 5th – 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm
    • Wednesday, August 7th – 9:00 am – 10:30 am
    • Friday, August 9th – 10:00 am – 11:00 am
    • Wednesday, August 14th – 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm (Arizona Cardinals joint practice)
    • Thursday, August 15th – 6:00 pm – 7:20 pm (Arizona Cardinals joint practice)

The Colts only have seven back-to-back practice days out of their twelve practices. They do not have three consecutive practice days or days where they practice in the morning and night. Those days are long gone. Indianapolis is already one of the last teams to report for training camp because Shane Steichen and company wanted to team healthier as the season goes on and limit injury risk leading up to the season.

“There’s no reason for Richardson to have a scheduled off day. If he does, I think there’s a concern.” Chappell stated.

Chappell’s statement could be another one of those situations where people might have a different opinion. If Richardson does have a scheduled off day, then that could be precautionary just to ensure he’s getting the proper amount of rehab and rest. However, most should fall into the same belief as Chappell.

When the Indianapolis Colts report on Wednesday, it will be exactly nine months since his procedure. He should be as close to full go as possible. If there is a scheduled off day, or any off days for that matter, then there should be some concern about the health of the franchise quarterback going into a de facto rookie season.
