INDIANAPOLIS – The I-69 extension is almost complete.

Next month, the new interchange at I-69 and I-465 will open on the southwest side of Indianapolis, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.

It’s the sixth and final connection for the interstate extension between Evansville and Indianapolis.

INDOT said initial work on the new interchange began in 2022 as part of the I-69 Finish Line project, which upgraded 26 miles of State Road 37 to interstate standards in Morgan, Johnson and Marion counties.

The new interchange includes two flyover ramps connecting I-69 and I-465 just west of the existing SR 37/Harding Street interchange.

South of I-465, the newly constructed I-69 diverts from the current path of SR 37 north of Edgewood Avenue. State Road 37, north of State Road 144, will officially become I-69 once the interchange opens.

The project has included the reconfiguration of I-465, additional lanes, new lighting, signs, landscaping and noise barriers. Construction on some elements is ongoing, with some lane restrictions and ramp closures scheduled for the weekend .

The I-69 extension has been years in the works. Construction started in 2008 with groundbreaking on the first section in southwestern Indiana, with the eventual goal of connecting Evansville to Indianapolis.

According to INDOT, I-69 was “the longest contiguous new terrain interstate construction project in the U.S.” at the peak of construction in 2012.
