WESTFIELD, Ind. –Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Anthony Richardson said he’s picking things up faster and the offense run by Colts Head Coach Shane Steichen is making a lot more sense to him as he gets ready for his second year in the NFL.

“I’m a lot more comfortable, a lot more comfortable with the calls when Shane (Steichen) is calling them. Then just looking at a defense, I’m able to scan the defense a lot longer and just check out what I’m going to have on a certain play. So I’m definitely a lot more comfortable in the offense, and I want to plan on continuing to get more comfortable in it,” said Richardson after training camp practice on Friday.

Richardson says he’s also improving his chemistry with wide receiver Josh Downs. Downs finished his rookie season second on the team in receiving and seventh among all rookies with 68 catches for 771 yards and two touchdowns.

“I just tried to tell him – ‘With the route I know we’ve got rules and steps to run it a certain way, but just get open. You’re going to get open. I’m going to get you the ball.’ I tell that to all the receivers. I know the coaches want us to take a certain amount of steps to get a certain route open, but I just tell them, ‘Get open and I’m going to try to find you the ball.’ So it’s just a matter of just working out chemistry and just knowing each other,” Richardson said.

You also may have noticed that a sign of Richardson is up on the JW Marriott hotel in downtown Indianapolis.

“That’s definitely cool. I appreciate the city embracing me. It means a lot to me. It lets me know I’m doing something right and I’ve got a lot of support behind me. So I’m thankful for it,” said Richardson.

Richardson is looking to have a bounceback season in 2024. On October 9, 2023, Richardson was placed on the injured reserve due to a grade three AC joint sprain he suffered in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans, which was initially announced for him to miss one to two months. Nine days later, the Colts announced that Richardson would miss the remainder of his rookie season.

He successfully underwent shoulder surgery to repair the sprain on October 24, 2023.

The Colts start the preseason on August 11 against the Denver Broncos. Their first regular season game is versus the Houston Texans September 8.
