Could the Colts be in running to sign Pro Bowl safety in free agency?

The Indianapolis Colts may feel bullish about what they have in the safety room, but there's a Pro Bowl option biding his time in free agency.

Despite being halfway through training camp, former Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons is still without a team. He's likely waiting for the right offer or the right situation to reveal itself.

Could that be Indy? The need is certainly there, especially with Julian Blackmon taking reps at free safety again. The Colts have the salary-cap space to make the move easily.

And now, Broncos insider Benjamin Allbright floated the possibility that Simmons "probably signs this week" to a team in the AFC South and that the Pro Bowl safety has had "over a dozen offers."

Of course, this should be taken with a grain of salt. Allbright never mentioned a specific team — just broadly stating a division without definitively saying Simmons would sign this week.

It's not exactly a ringing endorsement that the Colts are in the running.

With that said, the Colts need to make a move at safety. The Tennessee Titans just signed Quandre Diggs, who would have been a fantastic fit in the secondary.

We've discussed what the addition of Simmons would do for the Colts defense.

If the Colts are giving Blackmon — a strong safety last year — reps at free safety because they don't like what they've seen from Nick Cross and Rodney Thomas II, then they need to act before the season starts.

Simmons is a Pro Bowl talent who was released this offseason for salary-cap purposes. It wasn't a move made because he's lacking talent.

Since the start of the 2020 season, no player has had more interceptions than Simmons (19). That includes both safeties and cornerbacks. His 36 passes defensed during that span rank second among NFL safeties behind only Jessie Bates III (38).

Whether this happens or not is a total mystery, but the addition of Simmons would do wonders for Indy.
