Last year the Indianapolis Colts were one win away from making the NFL Playoffs in Shane Steichen ‘s first year as a head coach.

Considering he lost Anthony Richardson and Jonathan Taylor for portions of the season; Steichen still had his offense near top ten in important statistical categories.

    • 11th in points per game
    • 11th in total touchdowns
    • 10th in rushing yards per game
    • 7th most pass plays of 40+ yards
    • Tied 5th most rush plays of 20+ yards

There is always certain ways that coaches can improve from year one to year two. It felt like Steichen did a lot of things right last season. The team exceeded expectations based off of its projected win total and appears like he has the franchise trending in the right direction.

He joined Jake Query & Jimmy Cook on Query & Company Monday afternoon to weigh in on how this training camp is different for him compared to last year.

“I think it’s an understanding of our football team more than anything. Knowing the guys, knowing their personalities, I think that’s a big part of coaching is understanding who you’re dealing with. I don’t think you can coach every guy the same way. Just the operation of everything, even the building, just the ins and outs of the training room, the weight room, and how guys do things and how they operate and how I want it done around the building. I think that’s been really big for me.” Steichen stated.

Other topics that Steichen discussed with Query & Cook were:

    • Getting Anthony Richardson to understand when to fight for extra yards
    • Where things stand right now with the safety position
    • What he’s liked from Alec Pierce, Adonai Mitchell, and Laiatu Latu so far
