NFL insider reveals two positions the Colts could look to add help before the regular season

The Indianapolis Colts had a national media member as a guest at practice on Sunday, August 4.

The MMQB's senior NFL reporter, Albert Breer, was in attendance to check out the Colts training camp in Westfield, Indiana.

Beer had multiple takeaways from practice, but the one that stood out the most to me was his comments on the two positions the Colts could look to add a free agent at ahead of the 2024 season.

"So as you can tell, the Colts feel really good about where they are, and the shot they have to catch Houston in the AFC South. There are questions, of course. How the young corners come along is one. Another is who’ll be playing opposite Julian Blackmon at safety. Nick Cross, Ronnie Harrison Jr., and Rodney Thomas II are battling for the assignment, and I wouldn’t rule out a run at a vet like free agent Justin Simmons, depending on how that competition goes. Also, depth behind Jonathan Taylor at tailback is a bit murky. Trey Sermon’s had a nice camp, but there are questions beyond that, which makes that another area where the Colts could add a piece or two before the season starts."

    - Albert Breer of The MMQB

In terms of safety, I found it interesting that Breer named Justin Simmons specifically as a potential fit at safety for the Colts . I couldn't agree with Breer more; Simmons, on paper, is the perfect addition to help solidify the Colts' defense ahead of the 2024 season.

The next position he mentioned is another one that many were shocked that the Colts chose not to address this offseason, which was their backup RB job. The team lost Zack Moss in free agency to the Cincinnati Bengals, and as things stand, Trey Sermon would serve as the Colts' primary backup to Jonathan Taylor. Unlike safety, Breer didn't specify a specific free agent RB the Colts could target, likely due to the lack of upgrade options currently on the free agency market. If the Colts do make a move here before the regular season, I would watch the waiver wire after teams cut down to 53 players. That could be the Colts' best bet at landing an upgrade in the RB room who can take some of the stress off of Taylor in the running game, similar to the role Moss was so good in last year.
