In-N-Out Burger is in on north Indio — and it’s not alone.

A spokesperson for the City of Indio confirmed that it has OK’d the classic California fast food chain to build a nearly 4,000-square-foot location at The Palms shopping center on the north side of Interstate 10 near the intersection of Monroe Street and Avenue 42.

The new restaurant will join the city’s existing In-N-Out location on Highway 111 about 2½ miles south, making the two locations the closest In-N-Outs in the valley. Indio, the valley's most populous city, will also be the only one with more than one of the chain's restaurants. The new restaurant is one of four the city has approved to build at The Palms. The others are:

    • A roughly 3,700-square-foot Raising Cane’s
    • A 1,000-foot drive-thru and to-go only Salad and Go
    • A Sumo Dog, with the size not listed

The new restaurants, which will all be located in standalone buildings, will give The Palms a new hub of fast food dining. The site is also just about a mile away from the planned north Indio location of another major fast food draw, Chick-Fil-A, which will anchor a commercial center at Jackson Street and Avenue 42 that will also contain a Dutch Bros. Coffee.

Online site plans show the In-N-Out, Raising Cane’s and Sumo Dog will be built adjacent to one another on a plot of undeveloped land just to the west of the Walmart that will still have room for further development. The Salad and Go will be built within a collection of existing buildings just north of that site, between the existing Starbucks and Circle K gas station. Other existing businesses in the area include an urgent care, a T-Mobile store and an Arby’s.

Of the four chains, only Salad and Go is new to the Coachella Valley. That restaurant offers several salads as well as the ability for customers to customize their own plus wraps, soups and breakfast burritos, according to its website.

Raising Cane’s, which is known for its chicken fingers, opened a location in Palm Springs in 2022. Sumo Dog, which offers unique hot dogs such as the namesake one topped with wasabi relish teriyaki sauce and other Japanese toppings, also has another location in Indio.

That one is at another burgeoning spot for restaurants, The Canopy at Citrus on the south side of the city about six miles away from the new planned location.

The restaurants will bring new dining options to an area that has been growing rapidly and is poised to continue to do so. They will be located just across Monroe Street from 180 acres of open desert where a developer is proposing to build up to 3,200 apartments along with shops, restaurants and possibly a large distribution center. The website for the real estate company Lee and Associates currently advertises multiple open spaces that are available for rent at The Palms, including a 2.45-acre space. Other additions planned for the center include a Marriott hotel that will be built adjacent to the center’s two existing hotels. Plans for a movie theater to be built between Walmart and the hotels appear to have fallen through and are no longer shown on a current site plan.
