A student at Avon Intermediate School East caught with a gun on a bus this morning has been "removed" from the school and no threats were made to students, a spokesperson said.

Avon Schools said Monday morning that the fifth-grade student was "showing off" the gun to other students on the bus. Hours later, after reviewing footage from the bus, the district said the only other student who saw the firearm was the one who reported it to a teacher.

Avon Schools communication coordinator Kevin Carr said school administrators and Avon School Police intervened, confiscated a handgun and removed the student.

Carr also said no threats were made and the district will continue to investigate the incident and follow up with "appropriate discipline."

In an email to parents whose children were on the affected bus, superintendent Scott Wyndham said that once the gun was reported to a teacher, school administrators found the firearm inside the student's backpack, which was locked inside their locker.

The district later confirmed the gun was not loaded but that there was ammunition in the backpack.

The district is working with the Hendricks County Prosecutor's Office on appropriate discipline measures.

Avon's discipline policy states a student who brings a gun to school could be suspended for up to 10 days and expelled from the campus for the rest of the school year. The superintendent may reduce the length of the expulsion at their discretion.

Avon Intermediate School East principal Stephane Bordelon told parents in an email Monday afternoon that students were not told about the gun being found during the school day but social workers would be made available in the school on Tuesday.

The school leaders continue to remind students that if they ever see anything concerning they should always report it to a trusted adult.
