Two Indianapolis firefighters are recovering after being struck by a vehicle while working on a crash on I-65 southbound at 38th Street early Saturday morning, according to Indianapolis Fire Department .

Firefighters were dispatched a little after 3:45 a.m. to a two-vehicle crash that involved three people but no injuries. The firefighters were in the process of wrapping up the scene and awaiting Indiana State Police's arrival when a 30-year-old male driver hit two of them in his Nissan Altima at about 4:08 a.m.

The man, a resident of Pueblo, Mexico, was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated resulting in serious injury, driving with a blood-alcohol content above .15 and driving without a license. He was taken into custody at the scene.

A fire truck was in the far right lane, positioned at an angle to block oncoming traffic with its emergency lights flashing. The two firefighters who were injured were standing about a hundred feet south of the fire truck helping occupants in a vehicle when the Altima drove past the fire truck and struck them.

One of the firefighters was sent airborne and the other was pinned beneath the front of the car he was assisting.

Other firefighters who were helping the occupants of a second car, located in the grass, assisted the injured men.

Both were transported to Eskenazi Hospital. One firefighter sustained minor injuries and was checked and released. The second firefighter sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was alert and oriented on arrival at the hospital and is still currently there.

    Indiana State Police are investigating.
