Interlochen alumna Jewel to join Melissa Ethridge for concert

Two iconic performers will come together at Interlochen Center for the Arts when four-time Grammy nominee Jewel will perform with rock legend and two-time Grammy winner Melissa Etheridge on Monday for a sold-out performance.

Jewel, hailed as “one of the best singer-songwriters since Joni Mitchell” by the New York Times, is the creative force behind timeless hits such as “You Were Meant for Me,” “Who Will Save Your Soul,” “Intuition” and “Standing Still.” At Interlochen, she’ll also be playing tunes from her latest album, “Freewheelin’ Woman.”

Etheridge’s classics include “I’m the Only One,” “Ain’t It Heavy” and “Come to My Window.” No stranger to Detroit, she recently performed in the all-star, grand reopening concert for Michigan Central earlier this summer.

Jewel is a 1992 alumna of Interlochen Arts Academy. The show’s opening act will be another alumna, Rett Madison.

Interlochen is a nationally revered Michigan retreat for student artists from grades 3-12, as well as adults of all ages, for arts education programs designed to hone their skills and nurture their humanity.

Interlochen alumni read like a who's who in entertainment, including:

• Terry Crews, NFL player, Flint native and actor best known for TV sitcoms “Everybody Hates Chris” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” who attended Interlochen Center for the Arts in 1986.
• Vince Gilligan, creator, head writer, executive producer and director of “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” won a scholarship to Interlochen in his youth.
• Peter Yarrow, of 1960s folk legends Peter, Paul and Mary, attended in 1951 and ’52.
• Norah Jones, multi-Grammy-winning jazz singer/songwriter/pianist who has sold over 50 million records worldwide, attended Interlochen camps in 1994 and ’95.
• Ana Gasteyer, star of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” and Detroit-set “American Auto.” Gasteyer attended in 1979 and 1981.
• Felicity Huffman, Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award winner (and Oscar nominee) of “Desperate Housewives” fame, graduated from Interlochen Center for the Arts in 1981. Huffman is married to actor William H. Macy, and in recent years did prison time for her involvement in a nationwide college entrance exam cheating scandal.
• Jackson Rathbone, best known as Jasper Hale from the “Twilight” film series, majored in acting at Interlochen during his later high school years.
• Tovah Feldshuh, legendary Broadway actress, four-time Tony nominee and two-time Emmy nominee. Feldshuh attended Interlochen from 1963 to 1965.
• Benjamin A. Foster, who studied theater as a youth and starred in The Disney Channel’s “Flash Forward” as a teen before going on to feature in films such as “The Punisher,” “X-Men: The Last Stand,” “Alpha Dog” and more.
• Google co-founder Larry Page, who studied music composition, played multiple instruments and attended Interlochen Arts Camp.
• Ed Helms, comedian and actor beloved for his work on “The Office” and in “The Hangover,” attended in 1991.
• Phill Lewis, actor and comedian best known for his work on TV series such as “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody,” “Lizzie McGuire,” “Friends” and “The Wayans Bros,” attended Interlochen from 1981 through 1984.
• Kimiko Glenn, a 2006-07 Interlochen student who went on to become a Broadway and television actress recognized for her work as Brook Soso on “Orange is the New Black.”
• Rumer Willis, actress and singer daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, attended from 2002 to 2004.
• Christy Hefner, former chairwoman and COE of Playboy Enterprises and daughter of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, attended every summer from 1964 through 1969.
• Josh Groban, singer/singwriter/musician/actor with multi-platinum solo albums, attended in 1997 an ’98.

And then there’s…

• The late and deeply embattled financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who began playing piano at age five and attended Interlochen National Music Camp in 1967 and died mysteriously in prison in 2019.
