Music Column: Iowa City Flute Choir returns for a harmonious fall season

The Iowa City Flute Choir is thrilled to return for our fall semester.

The mission of this ensemble is to create performance opportunities for adult flutists of all ages and ability levels while also providing quality musical performances. There are no auditions required to join. If you are looking for a fun and supportive group of musicians to grow with, laugh with, and set new musical goals with, this group is for you.

We have participated in several exciting performances including the 2022 National Flute Association Convention in Chicago, The Iowa Bandmasters Association Conference in Des Moines, and the Iowa Arts Festival in Iowa City. Last year, we even held our first flute choir festival! This event consisted of flutists of all ages and skill levels from around Iowa coming together for workshops, performances, and an exciting collaboration with beatboxing flutist, Greg Pattillo. He combines his musicality, artistry, and classical roots in phenomenal ways. Check him out on YouTube, you won’t be disappointed!

Our spring 2024 program took our audiences on a musical journey around the world. From Ireland’s Cliffs of Moher and Mexico’s vibrant streets to getting stuck in New York City’s finest traffic jam, the best way to end any journey is by resting your head on your own familiar pillow. The dedication, musical storytelling, and eagerness to grow as individuals made the spring semester one to remember. This journey was only beginning − we hope you’ll join us for the rest of the ride.

Interested in joining? We will hold a social gathering at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29 in the lower level of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Iowa City for all prospective, new, and current members. This is a fun, casual way to meet new people and learn more about the group. All are welcome to stop by and share some light refreshments. Grab a friend (or two!) and join us. Rehearsals resume at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5 in the lower level of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Please email icflutechoir@gmail.com to learn how to join.

The Iowa City Flute Choir is a semi-professional flute choir made up of local professional and amateur flutists from Iowa City and the surrounding areas. The ensemble was formed in 2018 and has now grown to nearly 40 members, performing several times a year at local Iowa City community locations.

You can also follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay updated on performances, repertoire, and all things flute.

Rebecca Peterson is the marketing director for the Iowa City Flute Choir and also plays alto flute for the ensemble. She graduated from the University of Iowa in 2019 with a degree in Journalism, a certificate in writing, and a minor in music. She works at Flute Authority as their marketing strategist and lives in Cedar Rapids with her boyfriend, Daniel.
