When severe storms are possible in central Iowa this week

IOWA — Storm chances return to the forecast over the next couple of days, with some stronger storms possible in parts of Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Minnesota.
A warm front lifting through the region has led to showers and storms developing to the west of Iowa. Some of these will move into northwestern Iowa, but they should weaken somewhat as they move into the state.
It will be very hot across Central Iowa with highs reaching the low 90s across the state. Dewpoints will be in the low to mid-60s, so it won’t be too unbearable and heat index values will be very equal to the temperature.
As the cold front pushes in Wednesday afternoon and evening, some showers and storms could redevelop. Most storm activity should stay in northern Iowa, if it develops. There is a low but nonzero chance that storms could develop through the evening in northern Iowa and then drop to the south. If storms evolve in that way, they would then push southeast into Central Iowa from 8 to 10 PM. Skies should clear out by midnight whether or not additional cells fire up through the evening.
It will stay hot along and south of the front on Thursday. The front will stall across southern Iowa. Dewpoints will be high in the upper 60s to low 70s, feeling tropical.
The threat for storms shifts south on Thursday along with the frontal movement. A level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather is in place for far southeastern Iowa.
Some additional showers could redevelop by the late morning into the early afternoon. The better chance for severe weather will arrive by the evening hours and shift into southeastern Iowa. Cells could form into a line and bring the potential for hail and damaging winds. Most of the showers and storms should exit before midnight.
