An Indiana couple is facing charges following the tragic death of their diabetic daughter , who they allegedly neglected to treat properly .

Twelve-year-old Alice Ruby Bredhold was found deceased on July 4 on her bedroom floor at the family's residence in Evansville, as per an affidavit from NBC affiliate WFIE.

It appears that the young girl struggled with diabetes and her parents are accused of failing to manage her condition . Police were alerted after the state's Department of Child Services was notified of Alice's high blood sugar levels during school checks.

The Courier and Press and WEVV reported that a nurse once described Alice's blood-sugar level as "life threatening."

Records show she arrived at school with elevated blood-sugar levels 34 times since January, according to investigators, reports the Mirror US .

The Vanderburgh County Coroner has confirmed that Alice passed away due to diabetic ketosis, a severe complication of diabetes where a shortage of insulin leads to a dangerous accumulation of ketones in the bloodstream, necessitating emergency hospital care.

Further reports indicate that two additional children were taken from the home by officials. The house was reportedly in a deplorable state, cluttered with 'garbage and insects'.

Alice was a student at Evans Elementary School, where she was part of the orchestra, playing the cello.

A moving memorial described the young girl as a keen reader, actively involved in a local literary circle, as well as being part of a youth squad delving into geology.

An obituary shared: "Alice was naturally artistic and creative, and enjoyed doing crafts and drawing. She loved being with her family and spending time with friends. Alice will be remembered for her outgoing, energetic, and friendly spirit. She will be deeply missed."

In a development on Wednesday, after an investigation lasting over four weeks, the girl's parents were taken into custody on grounds of alleged neglect of a dependent resulting in death, and are currently being held at the Vanderburgh County Jail with bail set at $100,000.
