ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (WCBD)– The island has been packed all day with people celebrating July 4. Isle of Palms police told me parking began to fill up around 9 a.m., and people have been flowing onto the island all day.

While some people have begun to head home, we’re expecting another wave of people soon for the fireworks show.

People I spoke with said they love coming to the island – and they’re looking forward to the fireworks display tonight.

” July it’s, as he said, celebrating the best country in the world’s independence and, you know, having the freedoms we have here that some people don’t necessarily enjoy. Still, most of the world does, but a little extra here,” said David Doyle, a resident in Charleston.

People enjoyed taking a break from the workweek to make time for fun, family, friends, and food.

“I look forward to spending time with family being off. Being off for a few days and salmon burgers, French fries, and the grilled corn in the shop,” said Erika Williams, a visitor to Kingstree, South Carolina.

With such large crowds, the Isle of Palms police department has increased patrols on the beaches and the roadways. While encouraging everyone to enjoy the holiday, they remind people to do so responsibly.

“We’ve had too many tragedies in the Charleston area related to UI the past year, just horrible tragedies, so when it comes to DUI enforcement, we have zero tolerance. If you’re caught drinking and driving or driving under the influence of narcotics or alcohol, you will go to jail. We have zero tolerance for it, and officers on patrol throughout the weekend,” said the Isle of Palms Police Department.

The Isle of Palms is hosting a fireworks show on the beach that starts around 9 p.m.
