JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – A WJTV 12 News analysis of fatal accidents around the Jackson-metro area revealed where the deadliest roadways are in Jackson.

According to State Traffic Safety Information from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Mississippi had 1,961 fatal crashes between 2020 and 2022. Hinds County had the most fatalities. Though Interstates 20, 55 and 220 had deadly crashes, many fatal crashes around Jackson happened off the interstate. Below are roads to be vigilant on during your next drive to work or the cookout.

    Deadliest street: Northside Drive

    • Northside Drive from the Canadian National Railway crossing to the Manhattan Road intersection had the most recorded fatalities. That three-mile stretch had 11 fatal crashes killing 12 people over three years.

    Deadliest highway: U.S. Highway 80

    • Highway 80 from the Clinton Walmart to the intersection with Highway 51 was a deadly road to travel on between 2020 and 2022. With 13 deaths in 13 fatal crashes between both points, taking I-20 across the same distance is the safer option.

    Deadliest interstate: I-55 North/Southbound

    • Interstate 55 from the stack to the I-220 merger is the portion of the interstate most prone to fatal accidents in the Jackson Metro. Three fatal accidents occurred around the stack killing four people. Between exits 100 to 102 in both directions, six fatal accidents killed six people.

DOT data ranks Mississippi sixth nationally for pedestrians killed per capita in 2021. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Highway Loss Data Institute showcased that Mississippi had the most fatal crashes per capita nationally in 2021 and 2022. However, when you drive is a factor almost as important as where you drive.

Deadly crashes in Mississippi increased by 6% on major holidays. For Independence Day, the state averaged a 14% increase in fatalities compared to the rest of the year according to data compiled between 2016-2020.
