Former QB Reveals Interesting Take On Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence

Trevor Lawrence was once the hotly anticipated rookie for one lucky team. “Tank for Trevor,” fans repeatedly would joke. However, the Jacksonville Jaguars ‘ decision to give out the quarterback’s first big-money deal isn’t impressing at least one analyst.

Speaking on the “ Pat McAfee Show ,” former quarterback and current NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky expressed why he wasn’t sold on the move.

“Trevor’s play hasn’t warranted the $55 million a year salary, it hasn’t. … I’m a massive fan of Trevor Lawrence but he hasn’t ascended into the elite Quarterback conversation. The Jags are banking on that he’s going to.”

Of course, the Jaguars’ logic could be nailed down to something based on another criteria. Lawrence hasn’t delivered a Super Bowl or a deep playoff run yet in his career. However, he has done something perhaps equally difficult.

The Jaguars won nine games in 2023 and 2022. As such, they finished over .500 in both years. The Jaguars have not had back-to-back winning seasons since 2004-2005. So, Lawrence has elevated the team to a level they haven’t reached in roughly two decades.

Of course, it is unclear whether he can continue to deliver on that level. Either way, the Jaguars appear to be satisfied with simply not letting themselves be a doormat for the rest of the NFL. Also, it is worth keeping in mind that Lawrence’s first year was marred by the unsuccessful experiment of using Urban Meyer. In every year without Meyer, he has managed to win more than lose.

However, Lawrence has plateaued in terms of wins and losses, which can give reason to worry. Teams that get stuck around .500 usually fall before they rise.

Trevor Lawrence needs sense of urgency to deliver in 2024 despite league-leading extension

Additionally, Lawrence’s production took a hit between 2022 and 2023 from 17 more touchdowns than interceptions to just seven more touchdowns than interceptions. For the Jaguars to rationalize their decision properly, Lawrence will need to rebound in this area in 2024.

Of course, losing Calvin Ridley doesn’t make things any easier for Lawrence. However, the addition of Gabe Davis creates hope that Lawrence can see the same benefit that Josh Allen received. Christian Kirk is set to be Lawrence’s top receiver this year following the first non-1000-yard season of his career.

Will Trevor Lawrence rebound while enjoying his new riches?
