It was a busy and wet weekend for Janesville Legion Post 205, with four games played at the Janesville Youth Sports Complex. Post 205 (6-4-1) faced many delays and shortened games and finished 2-1-1 in games Saturday and Sunday.

Janesville started the weekend with a 4-4 tie with the Greendale Hawks in a four-inning game. After falling 2-1 entering the bottom of the second, Post 205 scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead. Janesville couldn’t hold its lead, however, and gave up two runs in the fourth while failing to score again in the tie.

Post 205 bounced back with a dominant 12-1 win over the Green Bay Black Sheep. Janesville exploded for five runs to start the contest and collected 10 hits in the four inning win.

After a night of rest, Post 205 was slow when it returned to the field. In another game against the Black Sheep, Janesville picked up another victory, but this time in dramatic fashion.

Down 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Janesville mounted a tremendous rally, scoring seven runs to win the game. With the bases loaded and no outs, Janesville’s Donovan Hatch, Christian Hobon and Logan Hanson earned consecutive walks to score three runs.

After a flyout, a walk to Tyler Hegle scored another as Post 205 cut its deficit to 7-5. The second out of the inning occurred in the next at-bat with a strikeout, but a Green Bay error on the next ball in play cleared the bases to give Janesville an 8-7 lead and win.

“They had a huge error on a ground ball to short that would have ended the game,” said Janesville coach Kerry Michaels. “The shortstop threw it in the dirt to the first baseman, it got by him and two more runs scored. That was the backbreaker for them. We didn’t play well early and they didn’t play well at the end. We made one more play than they did.”

Post 205 couldn’t keep its run going as it fell to the Hawks 3-2 in the final game of the tournament. Down 3-0 in the seventh inning, Janesville came close to tying the game with a two-run RBI groundout from Hobon. With two outs in the inning, Post 205 ended the contest with a strikeout.

Hobon got the loss on the mound for Janesville in that game, but he was solid throughout Sunday. He won the first game of the day against Green Bay after tossing 1 2/3 shutout innings, and he threw six more innings, allowing just six hits to the Hawks.

“We found out some things,” Michaels said. “We found out that Christian Hobon can win a game for us on the mound and that he can go deep into a game.”

After facing tough competition this weekend in a four-game series, Janesville will return to the field again on Wednesday with a home matchup against Lake Geneva at 7 p.m.

“A lot of valuable things were learned,” Michaels said. “We played really solid other than maybe three innings the whole weekend. Other than those three innings, we were a top-notch club. If we play that good down the stretch into the playoffs, we’ll be in good shape.”
