JANESVILLE — Heavy thunderstorms over the weekend damaged trees and power lines in the Janesville area, causing widespread outages.

At its peak around 9:30 p.m. Sunday night, a storm had knocked out service to about 11,000 Alliant Energy customers in Wisconsin, mainly in Rock County, Alliant Energy Senior Communications Specialist Tony Palese said.

“Crews working last night and this morning restored power for the majority of those customers and are still working to restore service for approximately 1,000 customers,” Palese said Monday.

The Janesville Police department continued to receive calls about fallen trees and power outages into Monday afternoon.

“The tree damage is pretty much throughout the city. Looking at our list, it’s pretty well spread out,” Sgt. Nicholas Drout of the Janesville Police Department said.

A tree took down a power line between Doty Court and Forest Park Blvd. on Court Street, leading to a total road closure.

“The tree was leaned into a power line. DPW won’t touch the tree until Alliant takes care of the line,” Drout said.

Alliant expected power to be fully restored in the Janesville area by Monday evening.

In some parts of the city, power was intermittent, going out, coming back on and going out again.

“As always, if customers come across any low-hanging or downed power lines, we want to remind them to stay away and give us a call at 1-800-ALLIANT (800-255-4268),” Palese said.
